Habitat for Humanity is an ecumenical
Christian housing ministry that seeks to
eliminate poverty housing and
homelessness from the world. Through the Habitat program, families pay for the homes and work for their homes. The family helps build the home, must pay for it, and take the responsibility that goes along with home ownership. Chartered in December, 1997, the Chillicothe chapter usually chooses one family per year to participate in the home-building process. Over the years, Habitat has offered many opportunities for families who may have been less fortunate to own their own homes. |

Habitat families are chosen based on need and
ability to pay for home ownership. They are
people needing decent housing and who are
caught in a cycle of not being able to save for a
home or qualify for a conventional loan. Criteria
of being selected a Habitat family include:
Since 1976, Habitat has built more than 100,000 houses in more than 80 countries, including some 30,000 houses across the United States. |

Because most of the materials
and labor are
provided either at cost or through donations,
the expense of building the house is kept at a
minimum. The Pony Express District of the United Methodist Church provided prayer, labor, and funds to fully construct a house in 2002. This included providing 20 construction crews for 20 Saturdays and paying for the costs involved in building the home (approximately $40,000). |
